“How I Work”: Alex Bean, Co-Founder of Divvy Pay @Alexwbean #HowIWork

“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m excited to feature Alex Bean, co-founder of DivvyPay and a veteran sales & marketing executive. Prior to Divvy, Alex ran sales for companies such as Surge, Fresh Consulting, Lucky Scooter Parts and more. He also spends time volunteering as a Youth Supervisor for Boy Scouts of America and is a Certified Scrum Master.

Suffice it to say, Alex gets stuff done. Here in his own words is how he does it.

Location: Lehi, UT

Current computers: Begrudingly a Mac because my Lenovo Yoga broke.

Current mobile devices: Samsung S7 for mobile work.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? OneNote has become my go to note taking, both quick and detailed. I also have multiple chrome profiles which allow me peace between my work and personal life. It’s an absolute must. I also swear by Lastpass, Slack, and Boomerang for Gmail.

What’s your workspace like? Tons of sticky notes. I use them for all the quick notes that come to my mind and to do lists. I also surround myself with as many white boards as I can get.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Templates by hubspot or gmail. either one but having email templates on hand are super handful. Also Slack keeps my writing shorter and quicker bc it’s less formal. I feel I save a fair amount of time using it.

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else?

What’s your favorite to-do list manager? See above, Onenote. Asana is others need the notes and tasks.

What do you listen to while at work? All musical scores. Hans Zimmer channel on Pandora is my go to for the last 10 years.

What are you currently reading? With a pregnant wife and start up hours, my reading game is reduced to blog posts, not books. I’m listening to How I Built This, Masters of Scale, and Revisionist History on podcast.

What’s your sleep routine like? I wake up at 7 (unless I’m motivated enough to work out) but I’m out the door within 20 minutes.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I have two that I recite to myself constantly. 1. Good habits go a long way. 2. Things are never as good as they seem and never as bad as they seem. — Being in start up world, the 2nd one helps me keep calm when things are both good and bad.

Anything else you want to add? Learn to get into ‘deep work.’ Too many people, myself included get distracted to easily.

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see Jeff Dance at Fresh Consulting  answer these questions.
