“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Amanda Nelson, Community Marketing Director at Salesforce. Amanda has held numerous positions at Salesforce for the past six years and is a well-known blogger in the B2B marketing community. Plus, if you’re in the Hartford, Connecticut area – stop by the dog park or community theater. You just might find her there.
Here, in her own words, is how she gets stuff done.
Number of unread emails right now? Zero! A full inbox stresses me out. I make sure to set aside time to go through my emails, respond, organize, etc. I also use my emails as a to-do list, and I don’t archive them until they’re 100% done.
First app checked in the morning? My first app of the day is Runkeeper. I have to get my morning run in to start the day off right.
First thing you do when you come into work? The first thing I do at work is check my written to-do list. I read the entire list and prioritize from there.
What is your email management strategy? see answer 1
Most essential app when traveling? I have a travel folder of apps on my phone. These apps get tons of use when I’m on the road, including Salesforce, TripIt, Weather.com and Lyft.
How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? The moment something really gets under my skin, I step away. I take a walk with my dog, get a nice cup or tea, do 10 minutes of yoga, etc. I refocus my mind and then come back to the task/situation with a fresh mindset.
What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance?
It’s important to have a personal hobby (or hobbies). In addition to my morning run, I take dance classes and do community theater. Working out your body and mind is crucial to a great work/life balance. I do these activities early in the morning or at night, and sometimes on the weekends.
Are there any work rituals critical to your success? My to-do list keeps me on track, but I also like to build relationships with coworkers, and get to know them outside of the work realm. As you learn their work style, their likes/dislikes, it makes it easier to understand how to achieve goals together and have a stronger relationship.
Location: I live in beautiful Connecticut. Originally from New York, I moved out of the city to start a family and have a better work/life balance. I still go to NY a lot, but I enjoy coming home to trees here in CT.
Current computers: I’m a nomad when it comes to work. I love setting up my computer quickly and easily, wherever I go. As I write this, I’m in a coffee shop. Therefore, I use a Macbook Air, which is light and easy for travel.
Current mobile devices: I just got the iPhone 8, and I love the longer battery life and bigger storage.
What’s your workspace like? I may be a nomad, but I do have a home base. My home office is a simple, clean standing desk, with dual monitors and lots of charging ports.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? At the end of each day, I always make a list of what I need to do tomorrow. That way, in the morning, I have clear direction and can dive right in!
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? I turn on my webcam for every meeting and conversation. It’s a must as a remote worker, and it encourages others to do the same. It’s a great way to get face time without being in the office.
What are you currently reading? I’m all about my book club, so I always have a book in hand. Currently, it’s The Light Between Two Oceans. I also like to read business books, including anything by Simon Sinek.
What’s your sleep routine like? I have to get 8+ hours of straight sleep each night. I love sleep!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? The best advice I ever received is about pushing yourself. Once you’ve reached your comfort level, push past that threshold. This advice gets me running to 110%, or turning it up to level 11. I use it in all facets of life, from work to running to dancing.
