“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Jillian Eyl, manager of demand generation at Sprout Social. Jillian has been an intern for the Minority Lead of the House on Capitol Hill, a Kindergarten teacher for Teach for America, not to mention a veteran of the B2B marketing circuit.
Suffice it to say, Jillian knows how to get stuff done. Here in her own words is how she does it.
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Current computers: Apple all the way! Work: MacBook Air. Home: MacBook Pro.
Current mobile devices: iPhone 6
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Phone apps: Stitcher for podcasts, Headspace for meditation, Spotify for music, Bambu for social sharing, and Google Maps for fending off an arguable directional deficiency. Computer programs/websites: Slack, Salesforce, OneNote, LinkedIn.
What’s your workspace like? Organized chaos. I’m a big list person, so post-its and notebooks are always strewn about. You’ll usually find a La Croix and trail of popcorn on my desk as well.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? If you’re tasked with something that takes less than 5 minutes to complete, don’t put it off. It’ll save time in the long-run if you knock it out right away instead of adding it to the never ending to-do list.
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Keeping balls in the air. In any given day I’ll be queuing up promotions with our email team, building an advertising plan with our paid team, scheduling campaigns with our social team, working on messaging with sales development, and building target account campaigns with sales leadership. What fun would it be if every day looked the same?!
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Trello. I began using it when I started at Sprout and it now also serves as my wedding project manager. (I can’t believe I just admitted that to the public.)
What do you listen to while at work? Our office is open-concept so I’m usually attentive to the marketing team chatter around me. If it gets too noisy, I’ll pop in headphones for some country music. Oh my, where to start! I like the ones you’d expect: Kenny, Luke, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood. Always love some old-school Shania or Rascal Flatts (arguably not that country but I like them anyway).
What are you currently reading? Widow for a Year by John Irving. It’s holding my attention but I don’t like that it took 300+ pages for the widow to get introduced.
What’s your sleep routine like? I’m a total night-owl but aim to fall asleep by 11:30 and wake up by 7. I’m also a self-admitted snooze button aficionado.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? You’re not going to be good at everything or please everyone; focus on what’s in your realm of control and learn to let the rest go. I’m still working on this!
Anything else you want to add? Wait the extra minute before biting into fresh-out-of-the-oven pizza. You’ll thank me later.
Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see BLANK answer these questions. Kelly Dotson (SAVO) or Andy Crestodina (Orbit Media Studios)
