“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m thrilled to feature, Josh Baez, Marketing Coordinator for Heinz Marketing.   For our clients Josh manages social media campaigns, blogs, newsletters, emails and more.  He also helps out with design and copywriting, bringing to the table new perspectives and great ideas.  In his free time, Josh has a passion for music—having released three full-length records and a handful of smaller releases.  He also loves geek culture, travelling, plants, and baking. He learns so quickly and brings a ton of life and laughter to the team and culture at Heinz Marketing!  Here in his own words is how he does it all:

Location: Bellevue, WA

Number of unread emails right now? I’m an “Unread 0” kind of guy. I can’t leave the office with any unread emails.  That also goes for push notifications on my iPhone – goodbye, red balloons!

First app checked in the morning?  Instagram, Facebook, personal email, coffee maker.

First thing you do when you come into work?  The first thing I do is say hello to whoever’s there before me as I walk to my desk – we have a small office, so not saying good morning or some kind of greeting would be fairly obvious (and rude!)  I like to then unpack my computer, turn it on, and check my email before doing anything else.  Once I’ve caught up on whatever emails were sent the night before, I like to write my to-do list for the day.  Personally, I’m a fan of a handwritten to-do list – that feeling of physically checking off a task with the stroke of my pen is one that few others can compete with!  Once all that stuff is done, I’ll go and grab some hot water from the kitchen and pour myself some pour-over coffee.  Now, the day can truly begin!

What is your email management strategy?  As I said before, I’m a big “Unread 0” kind of guy.  I usually manage this by opening a new email as soon as I get it, reading it, and then responding if I need to.  For some, doing that would interrupt their workflow, but for me, it helps me keep an eye on everything that needs my attention and what I need to prioritize.  It also lets me keep tabs on anything pressing I might need to take care of immediately.  It’s less of a “strategy” and more of “organized chaos.”

Most essential app when traveling?  Google Sheets is my best friend.  Before a trip, I’ll create a multi-tabbed spreadsheet in Google Sheets that I can access on and offline.  It contains my flight information, times of arrivals and departures, places I’m staying, restaurants to go to, sights to see, etc. etc.  Ever been to a new country where you can’t get online?  You’ll thank me later.

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused?  Podcasts are a great joy in my life.  I actually think I listen to podcasts more than music.  Whenever I’m feeling stressed out or need to take a breather, I’ll usually put on one of my many podcasts and go take a walk.  My podcasts are anything but business-related, so it gives me some time to re-center myself and take a break when things get too chaotic.  To stay focused, I like to listen to movie scores with a pair of over-ear headphones.  Doing this let’s me tune out any background noise and let’s me really dial in on what needs to get done.  I don’t understand how people can listen to songs with lyrics when they work – I tried.  I failed.

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance?  I think this balance is one that is incredibly important to keep, and while many people preach about it, a rare few actually practice it.  Especially in today’s world where work is no longer resigned to a physical space, it’s important to remember that, while work is important, your mental health should be one of your top priorities (along with friends, family, and breakfast food for dinner.)  For me, I like to get all my work done when I’m physically at my desk.  I don’t want to go home just to have to take my computer out again.  When I’m home, I’m home.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success?  Not really – I’m not a very superstitious guy.  But out office does have a tradition where we throw coffee out the door and scream “Get out of here!” for good luck.  I like to think that helps.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?  For work: email (obviously), Slack, and Google Docs (that includes Sheets).  For play: Instagram and Spotify.

What’s your workspace like?  I like to think I’m a neat and organized person, but anyone who’s seen my desk, and by extension, my apartment, will tell you otherwise.  But all that being said, I’m definitely a neat and organized person.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack?  I like to think my unrelenting sense of humor is enough of a lifehack.

What are you currently reading?  Amy Poehler’s “Yes Please”

Last thing you do before leaving work?  Read those unread emails, ensure I’ve completed any outstanding items on my to-do list, pack up my bag, and I’m out of there.

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge?  I mean, I’m pretty sure I’d get some side-eyes if I didn’t mention my wonderful manager, Maria Geokezas!  But seriously, she’s great.  She’s basically made me the marketer I am today, and I wouldn’t know a quarter as many Excel tricks as I do without her.  My teammate, Rebecca Smith, is also a powerful force of nature when it comes to anything B2B sales and marketing.  All three of us make a pretty awesome team that I’m super lucky to be a part of!

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best?  I feel like I’m at the Academy Awards.  In addition to Maria and Rebecca, everyone at the Heinz Marketing team have played a role in some way in my life and who I am.  I’d also like to thank my mom, my dad, my dog, and my plants.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  “Act in a way that if everyone in the world acted the same, the world would be okay.”  Basically, don’t be a jerk.  (Edited for profanity.)

Name a guilty pleasure TV show: Gilmore Girls had a profound effect on my life since I binge watched the series in less than a month in 2016.  So, that.
