By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing
“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m thrilled to feature Juli Bacon, President of JB Consulting Systems. She has over two decades of Human Resources and Business experience. Juli and her amazing team take care of our accounting and HR for Heinz Marketing and are A-mazing. We trust, respect and rely on her more than one can imagine. Her approach to every challenge is as gracious as it is efficient—a rare combination that makes her an essential resource in an arena where people are the central focus. She is one busy lady. She is the Immediate Past Chair for Professional Women in Building and for the Columbia Tower Club she is both a Member-Business Alliance Committee Chair and also sits on the Board of Governors. She’s also a proud military mom. Here in her own words is how she does it:
Location: Woodinville, WA or I can be in any place and work – DC, California, Hawaii
Current computers: 1 main computer – HP – can’t remember the name, I rarely use it, 1 Asus laptop
Current mobile devices: Samsung Edge, S6 – I’m an android girl
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Remote Desktop Connection, dropbox, google maps, hotels.com, Alaska air, Expensify, Amazon and my banking aps
What’s your workspace like? Depends on where I am. Right now, I am sitting in my bed, it could be my car, my recliner, standing desk or outside – all I need is a computer. We are mostly paperless.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? I use my phone apps for almost everything I can manage. And Pick up the phone and call someone if it is going to take more than 2 texts or emails
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? I delegate better than most business owners I know. My whole goal is to delegate 95% of client work to my team and focus on building the businesses and coming up with new ideas.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Color note. I’ve tried others, but just a simple check list of the things I need to get done in a day keeps me on track
What do you listen to while at work? Silence. I don’t listen to anything while I am working, or I start singing along and lose my train of thought.
What are you currently reading? I read 3-4 books a week. My reading is primarily to shut my mind off so I read mysteries and thrillers
What’s your sleep routine like? Hah! What routine? I usually go to bed around 10:30 or 11 and wake up between 5 and 7. It depends if I am in training season. If I am in triathlon training season, I am up at 4 or 430 and in bed by 10. I am doing a half Ironman in the fall, so it will probably be up at 4 bed by 930. I’ve recently discovered that I am able to nap and loving it
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? My dad told me to hire people who could do the job I needed better than me and get out of their way and let them work. Ask any of my employees – I am not a micromanager.
Anything else you want to add? I am a huge convert to taking time to take care of yourself and exercise. Whatever you do during the week, take an hour or two or more to do something for yourself. Schedule time to exercise and do something fun. Since I started I work fewer hours and am able to do more with less time.
