“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week This week I’m excited to feature Marne Reed, chief evangelist and VP of strategic alliances at PFL. Marne balances a high-powered job with an active family all while raising chickens and fighting off bears in Bozeman, Montana. Here in her own words is how she does it:
Location: Livingston, MT, Indianapolis, IN, and many airplanes
Current computers: Dell laptop
Current mobile devices: Hello Moto!
What apps/software/tools can¹t you live without? The Almighty Google, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Pipedrive, PFL PMC (of course), Outlook, Go To Meeting and the BIG ONE…SaneBox.
What’s your workspace like? Very open and bright natural light, being in Montana this is a must. My back is facing the snowcapped Absaroka mountain range. Often times I feel a wet nose nudge me during my day to insist on getting a dog treat. I have a standing desk that has a ninja warrior holding my headset. A Buddha head to remind me to breathe on occasion and two beautiful boys staring at me throughout the day.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Implementing David Allen’s “Getting Things Done”. I would go insane without it. If something can be dealt with in under two minutes, knock it out. If not, put it in the right holding place to come back to. Don’t let things sit in your Inbox as repository. Block out times on your calendar for project work.
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Effective communications and building relationships. Helping others to adapt their communication process and style to meet their desired outcomes.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Pipedrive
What do you listen to while at work? Salespeople selling, dogs barking on occasion. Solutions Architects heckling the Sales teams.
What are you currently reading? Eloquence – The Elements of Eloquence
What’s your sleep routine like? The process begins by tucking my two boys in bed even though one is a teenager. Then spending quiet time with my husband. After that it sadly falls apart. I have learned to refuse to check my work email prior to bed so I don’t work in my dreams all night long. While this has helped, I still wake up frequently throughout the night with some epiphany of how to solve a problem. That coupled with having to let our my aging Newfoundland to go the bathroom my sleep schedule leaves something to be desired.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? From my Grandmother “If you can’t control it, don’t worry about it. Worrying will do nothing”. Being hyperaware of unproductive emotions and channeling to productive.
Anything else you want to add? This was an awesome exercise. I loved it!
