“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m excited to feature Matt Amundson, VP of Marketing and Sales Development for EverString.  Matt has already amassed a very successful career managing sales organizations for companies such as Marketo, TIBCO Solutions, The Princeton Review and more.  Matt also played collegiate football at UCLA, a center who blocked for former NFL running back DeShaun Foster.

Here, in his own words, is how Matt gets stuff done.

First app checked in the morning? Gmail, of course! No just kidding, ESPN

First thing you do when you come into work? Meet personally with all of my team members in the office.  Ask them their plan for the day and check in on any outstanding projects.  I do like to try to pump each one of them up or crack a joke to set the mood for the day.

What is your email management strategy? I’m getting pretty organized with Gmail, so my email separates well into filters that allow me to prioritize who I respond to and when.  I also hit spam on emails that are not relevant to me.

Most essential app when traveling? From a practicality perspective: Lyft. From a personal perspective it has to be FaceTime so I can see my kids each night while I’m gone.

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? I meditate every day.  There are great apps for it and I have a lot!  I’m a premium Headspace customer, but I also use Insight Timer and Oak (both are free).  It’s amazing how clear you get and how much more productive you are when you meditate.  Everyone needs to find the 10 minutes to add this in.

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance? I live as close to my office as possible.  I don’t own a home, so it makes it easy to move to a new location when I get a new job.  I do not have to get on a freeway to drop my daughter off at daycare, drop my son off at school and get to work.  Also, at the end of the day if work is done at 6:30, I can be home by 6:37.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success? Setting an intention is important to me.  The best way to accomplish this is the most basic, write it down.  I keep a personal journal for what I plan to accomplish in a day, week, month and quarter and being able to go back and reference that when things get busy helps me find clarity in chaos.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Salesforce, Marketo, SalesLoft, Engagio, Terminus, InsightSquared, HeadSpace, my Garmin Fenix 5, Nike Run Club

What’s your workspace like? Chaotic.  I keep a desk in both the marketing area and SDR area.  I like to sit in with both teams every single day.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Wake up early and do the hardest thing first.  I get up a 5:30am each day to go for a run which is the hardest thing I do each day.  Once that’s out of the way the world kinda feels like my oyster.

What are you currently reading? Fire and Fury (sorry)

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge? Wow, there are a lot.  I’d be nowhere without Maria Pergolino.  She’s both a source of constant inspiration and just a great friend.  My current boss and CEO, JJ Kardwell who is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around.  Steve Dodsworth, who gave me my start in Silicon Valley, the guy is incredible.  Kyle Porter at SalesLoft, the guy has accelerated my career by light years.  Heidi Bullock, who is an amazing marketer and still one of my down to earth people I know.  Craig Rosenberg, who has the answer to everything, and is one of the funniest people on Twitter. Peter Herbert for his unbelievable ability to execute and complete lack of fluff.  Dayna Rothman, who is just a force of nature.  And of course, Kristen Wendel for her fire and grace! Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best? First and foremost, my wife and children! Then the best group of co-workers I could ask for: Jack Veronin, Gordon Jen, Michael Dooling, Sara Koppes, Linda Fitzek who is the most amazing operations leader and mind I’ve ever met, Justine Barisone.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Get fired for something you did, not something you didn’t do.

Anything else you want to add? Add something to the space you occupy.  Don’t just fill out fields in Salesforce.  Don’t just build a nurture.  Don’t just have a booth.  Be different and put who you are into what you do.  I think so many of us forget to surprise and delight – that’s what we’re supposed to be doing!
