“How I Work”: Shannon Martin, Director of Marketing at Podbean & Director of Communications at Aging Wisely @AgingWisely #HowIWork

“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m thrilled to feature Shannon Martin, Director of Marketing at Podbean AND director of communications at Aging Wisely.  And she’s doing all of this from her homebase in Huangpu District in Shanghai, China.

A graduate of both Wake Forest (BA) and Georgia (MS), Shannon has been an ESL teacher as well as a Reading Buddies volunteer to help foreign students improve their English skills. Suffice it to say, Shannon gets stuff done.  Here in her own words is how she does it.

Location: Shanghai, China

Current computers: Lenovo laptop, Acer laptop, an HP Stream used for travel/mobility

Current mobile devices: Samsung Galaxy J3 with dual SIMs

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? WeChat for everyday tasks (it’s my primary means of payment, ordering things, etc.) and personal communication. MS Word, PowerPoint, WordPress and Hoostuite for writing, slideshows, and social media. I use Hubspot as a CRM and love it for collaborating with my team. Canva’s also a new favorite for graphics. The main thing I really couldn’t live without is the “cloud” since I’m so mobile, Google’s tools especially.

What’s your workspace like? I have two primary workspaces. At home, I’m in a small office that’s also storage. I sit facing a window and hear all the sounds of the big city. My window ledge has family pictures and a bunch of trinkets from my travels. My desk is simply my laptop (raised on a stand with a wireless keyboard and mouse, which has saved my neck!), a printer, a notebook and pen, and a cork board with photos and postcards. At the office, where I work a couple days/week, I have another laptop and another notebook. I’m surrounded by my colleagues and we have lots of windows so it’s full of light.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? I’ve pretty much automated much of my personal life, having been semi-nomadic/living abroad so long. Therefore, bill paying and chores take up very little time. In China, I use the WeChat app to do so many things. It’s one click to top up my cell phone, pay the electricity, etc. I’ve minimized and cut out a lot of unnecessary things in my life, which frees up time and energy for what I care about most.

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Wordsmithing

What’s your favorite to-do list manager? I calender certain tasks, but I’m back to pen and paper for most to-dos. Having a good routine makes things simple.

What do you listen to while at work? Nothing 90% of the time. I find quiet is best for writing. While doing some tasks, I listen to podcasts.

What are you currently reading? Pachinko, a Korean family saga spanning many interesting periods in Korea and Japan. It’s for one of my book clubs and I can’t wait to discuss it. I’m completely captivated by the story.

What’s your sleep routine like? I NEED 8 hours. Because my husband and I have odd schedules, the hours can vary a bit but I try to keep it consistent. I don’t do well with jet lag, unfortunately.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? When something’s bothering you, stop blaming outside circumstances and look inside. Think about what you need to change, and what you can do to change your perception/reaction.

Anything else you want to add? I’m a podcast super fan and love doing this work. Podcasts are a great means to tell a story, share a message, connect with community and more. I love to chat with anyone who’s thinking about doing a podcast or wondering why they should.
