“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features from Inc Magazine and Lifehacker’s. In that vein, we started our own series asking several leading business leaders and sales experts (including but not limited to Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi.
This week I’m thrilled to feature Stephanie Thomas, senior field marketing manager for Demandbase. I’ve seen Stephanie at work and still have no idea how she gets everything done. If you’ve never had a field marketing role, it’s hard to describe the sheer volume of detail involved in driving success.

Number of unread emails right now? Six unread…how many are open and minimized? Now, that’s another story.
First app checked in the morning? Slack.
First thing you do when you come into work? Running straight into a meeting – sometimes literally.
What is your email management strategy? While I admire people who disconnect at 5pm, my strategy is more of an “always on” approach. Even if it’s a quick inbox check on Saturday morning, it cleans out the junk and helps me start each day with a prioritized list of emails.
Most essential app when traveling? Tripcase is a lifesaver. It works as a concierge and itinerary. It can get messy when you have back-to-back trips, but then again, what isn’t messy when you have back-to-back trips.
How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? Have you ever done a crossword puzzle and been stuck on a particular word? Then you take a break and walk away from it. When you come back, the word comes to you as if it’s been there all along? Frustration in the workplace is like that. Sometimes you have to take a break, walk away, get a coffee. When you come back, it’s easier to focus and your priorities slide into place.
That said, I work in a role where you can’t always take a break. In that situation, you buckle down and get it done. You can destress at yoga later.
What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance? I’m on the younger side of the workforce. With no family at home, I have less balance than others. Perhaps it’ll catch up to me, but for now, I’m enjoying the blended approach.
Are there any work rituals critical to your success? Besides caffeine? I’m a firm believer in listening to music while working. When I need to crank out an entire nurture track or set up a handful of landing pages & promotion plans, that’s when Spotify becomes my best friend.
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Slack & Expensify for work. Outside of that, Ted (for my Ted talks obsession) & Instagram tend to consume my free time.
What’s your workspace like? I thrive in chaos. I have an “ugly sweater” trophy from December, cough drops (thanks, flu season), thinking putty, 4-5 mugs full of coffee/water/tea, and then some.
I also have swag, beer, and wine under my desk (#fieldmarketerlife).
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Outlook filters.
What are you currently reading?
Non-Fiction: Good to Great by James Collins. It’s explains why some companies transition to great companies and how most companies fail to do so.
Fiction: The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz. It’s a surreal dystopian about life post-Arab Spring.
Last thing you do before leaving work? Clear out my inbox. I can’t leave work with unread emails. I’m almost dreading climbing the corporate ladder because there will come a day I can’t avoid it.
Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge?
Allison Munro is a huge influence on my career. She took a chance on a 22-year-old sales rep and opened the door to my marketing career. She continues to inspire and challenge me, even from 3,000 miles away.
Natasha Morgan has been a mentor both professionally and personally. Working under her at Oracle, I learned a lot about collaboration and work/life balance.
Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best?
Jessica Fewless – The woman moves mountains for her team. She told me once that you hire smart people so you never have to second guess them. The trust she puts in her team is second to none. That trust clears roadblocks and helps me do what I do best.
Following up to that, my team is full of rockstar marketers and inspiring women. Christine Farrier, Beth Tiltges, Leanne Chescoe, and Hope Garbo. We motivate each other through creativity, competition, and a lot of laughter.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “You have to look out for yourself. No one else is going to.” It sounds bleak but it’s meant as a reminder to lean in. No one else is going to ask for your raise or promotion. Speak up for yourself.
