If you’re like most of us, the past holiday season was spent catching up with friends, visiting family, enjoying good times, good food and lots of cocktails. Appreciating and celebrating the here and now. Being present in the moment.
And now it’s Resolution Season.
For many of us that means eliminating all the things we came to depend on during the holiday season: Rich food, lots of socializing and plenty of booze. But let’s be real – stopping all this and keeping to our resolutions to eat less, drink less, spend less is really hard for a month, let alone the whole year.
Instead of the strict 31-day cleanse I typically start on January 1st (aka Drynuary) that eliminates alcohol, sugar, caffeine, dairy, gluten (and fun!!), this year I’m keeping it real. My goal is to use January to develop some healthy habits that I can carry through to the end of 2018 and beyond. This isn’t a cop out. It’s a process — and this year I’m approaching Drynuary by incorporating these health-oriented goals of less sugar and alcohol into my daily routine to create good habits that last.
The Myth of Cultivating New Habits
For years now, I’ve heard people reference this “21-day” rule about creating new habits. ICYMI – it goes something like – if you can keep a new activity going for 21-days it becomes a long-term habit. For me, my cleanse seems to get easier after I’ve been on it for 3 weeks. But it certainly doesn’t last much longer than the month of January. That’s because, from a more recent study, health psychology researchers found it takes more than two months, on average, before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact.
I won’t be cleansing for 66 days.
It’s completely unrealistic to think that after a long week at work, I won’t feel like unwinding with a glass of Chardonnay, or Nachos with a homemade Margarita. Or attend a business networking event an
d walk around with a glass of water (I know people do it, I’m not one of them). Or, have friends over on the weekend to watch the football playoffs and not have a glass of beer. Instead, this year my goal is to incorporate some fun and healthy cocktails – Mocktails — into my cleanse. If you are interested, try them with me and let me know how your New Year’s resolutions go. Here are a few of my favorites to get you started.
Hibiscus, Orange and Vanilla Agua Fresca – a change up to the “virgin” Margarita.
The Huckleberry Shrub – You may have seen these popping up on bar menu’s. Shrubs are traditional fermented medicinal cordials, similar to a fruit liqueur, starting in the 1400’s. Typically made with vinegar and herbs, they are similar to Kombucha. But in my opinion, much tastier!
BA Brad’s Health Tonic – Mix it with soda water for a tasty and refreshing mocktail that will give your immune system a boost through these winter months.
Green is the New Black With avocado and spinach, this one is almost a smoothie.
